ServiceNow announced its participation in DevOps at the annual event “Knowledge 18” held in Las Vegas, USA on May 9. Chief Product Officer CJ Desai said in his keynote speech that the next version to be released in the second half of 2018 will use artificial intelligence (AI) to add convenience and automation. He showed his motto to his clients: “Create the jobs of the future”.

Internal use of DevOps commercialized “Enterprise DevOps”

The company started with IT Service Management (ITSM) and has now expanded to security, customer service, personnel, etc. based on a single platform “Now Platform”, but will again expand into new areas through DevOps.

Pat Casey, Senior Vice President of ServiceNow Dev Ops

ServiceNow’s DevOps is a set of software development methods on the Now Platform, in which development and operation are performed by the same team. The rapid development of software and services has become essential for all companies, and ServiceNow is no exception. In fact, the “Enterprise DevOps” announced this time is the result of DevOps built by the ServiceNow software development team.

Pat Casey, senior vice president of DevOps, said that the two common definitions of DevOps are “speed” and “the planning, development, testing, implementation, and operations cycle in a team.” This is an important difference. On the other hand, tools related to DevOps are flooded: “There are at least 500 types. It is decentralized. If you want to start DevOps, you must first choose a tool,” Casey said. ServiceNow uses tools such as Eclipse, GitHub, Jenkins and Puppet.

The function of Enterprise DevOps is that it can not only balance speed, but also balance management and visualization. Casey said: “We want ServiceNow to become a platform for enterprise DevOps execution.”

The official release of Enterprise DevOps will need to wait for “Madrid” to be released in the first quarter of 2019, but before that, “London” (planned to be released in the third quarter of 2018) will be “agile development”. Features such as Japan’s agile program and integration of collaboration tools popular with developers such as Slack and Microsoft Teams (described below) will be added.
