ServiceNow, a provider of digital workflow software, is acquiring Lightstep, a developer of system observability technology, and ServiceNow says this is one of its largest acquisitions.
On Monday, ServiceNow announced an agreement to acquire Lightstep, but did not disclose the financial terms of the transaction. ServiceNow expects to complete the acquisition by the end of the quarter.
Lightstep is located in San Francisco and develops next-generation application monitoring and observability tools. DevOps engineers use these tools to build, deploy, run, and monitor cloud-native applications. According to ServiceNow, the company’s software is used by GitHub, Spotify and Twilio.
Lightstep was founded in 2015 by CEO Ben Sigelman, COO Ben Cronin, and Chief Architect Daniel Spoonhower. The company’s team members improved modern observability by working on tracking and metric monitoring at Google, and created OpenTracing and OpenTelemetry open source projects.
According to ServiceNow, the underlying technology of Lightspeed software analyzes system-wide indicators, tracks data and logs in real time to understand the causes and effects of changes in application performance and reliability, and speeds up “development speed” without affecting quality.
Lightstep CEO and co-founder Ben Sigelman said in a statement: “Today, observability is mainly beneficial to DevOps teams that build and operate mission-critical applications. “We have always believed that the value of observability should extend to The entire enterprise provides greater clarity and confidence for every team participating in these modern digital businesses. “
“By joining ServiceNow, we will jointly realize this vision for our customers and help change the world of work in the process-we are extremely excited about this,” Sigelman said.
By adding Lightstep’s capabilities to its technology portfolio, ServiceNow can extend its coverage from IT service management and IT operations management to the customer’s DevOps team.
The company said in a statement that ServiceNow will also “apply Lightstep’s observability capabilities across the enterprise through digital workflows, transforming real-time insights into actions of all technologies, people, and processes to achieve digital business.”
ServiceNow’s Now platform coordinates technical and team responses and actions around workflow changes that drive digital transformation.
ServiceNow said in a statement: “Customers will be able to use Lightstep’s capabilities and ServiceNow’s IT workflow solutions to weave different elements into a seamless digital structure, and more easily monitor and respond to key signals and indicators of software health. “This provides businesses with confidence and clarity to drive faster innovation and better results throughout the digital experience.”
