Florida is a tourist destination and famous for its vibrant agro-industry, but the state of Sunshine has consistently attracted the attention of large technology companies.

Eric Sander, executive director of the Florida Engineering Experiment Station at the University of Florida, said much has changed over the past two decades, especially since the September 11 attacks, which have severely disrupted Florida’s economy.

“The things that 9/11 taught us as a state were that we really needed to diversify our economy,” he told Business Insider. “Florida was highly dependent on agriculture and tourism. It was a relatively small technology sector. 9/11 was a kind of game changer. As a state, we realized that we really needed to focus on the tech industry. The state of Florida.”

The cost of living is lower than traditional third-party technology centers such as Florida, California and New York, the third largest in the United States by population. This has made it attractive to leading tech players led by Amazon, Oracle, IBM, Cisco and Serviceway.

Sander said the coronavirus crisis and the rapid shift in remote operations could draw more attention to the convenience of setting up operations in Florida and “there is a new realization across the industry that a lot of work can be done at a distance.”

“I think it will actually benefit Florida,” he said. “There are opportunities to work remotely on a long-term basis and many companies are looking at that.”

Business Insider analyzes data from the 2020 release of the US Office Offer Foreign Labor Certification for permanent and temporary foreign workers to determine what tech talents five companies, including engineers, developers and data scientists in Florida, provide.

Companies are required to disclose information such as salary ranges when hiring foreign workers under the H1-B visa program, while giving insights on how these large companies are interested in acquiring talent. Significantly, these disclosures may not tell the whole story, as they do not necessarily account for cash or stock bonuses as part of the total compensation package – but they give rare insights into how tech companies actually pay their employees.
