In a pandemic, it is vital that authorities and healthcare providers must be mobilized quickly. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Washington State was the location where the country’s first COVID-19 death was reported in the United States in February 2020. Since then, the virus has spread to almost every state. This situation is classified as a global pandemic.
Medical staff are controlling the virus around the clock. The Washington State Response Team, composed of more than 150 people, is geographically distributed. In order to slow down the spread of the virus, team members rest 7 days a week, work 12 hours a day, and then take a break.
State agencies, emergency responders, and healthcare professionals quickly established incident management structures to deal with the virus outbreak. With the help of ServiceNow’s Now Platform, a team led by health authority CIO Jennifer McNamara successfully developed an application. Representatives of the competent department can digitize the process to fill key positions in the incident management team with the right people.
Jennifer McNamara’s team developed an emergency response operation application on the Now Platform to manage the COVID-19 situation in Washington State. This application is now available for free to other organizations and institutions. Through this application, resources and personnel in key locations can be optimally managed. It is also based on national standards or guidelines when planning and implementing crisis measures to support emergency response and civil protection procedures at the federal and local authority levels.
With the help of the app, Jennifer McNamara’s team not only responded quickly to the virus outbreak, but also controlled the spread and impact of the virus. The team can also apply for maximum compensation for crisis-related expenditures from federal funds through the application. The team is currently building on the success of this phase and is automating other incident management functions such as resource demobilization, planning, logistics and finance.
By digitizing these key work processes, the team will be able to save time in managing logistical details, while being able to control communication and help those affected.
