HR technology suppliers fight for employee experience

Now, as companies respond to the pandemic, these “back-end” suppliers are losing their share of products that satisfy employees.

Bersin identified three emerging categories that are shaping the human resource technology market. The first category, now called the employee experience platform, has more and more products. With its disruptive Viva products, LinkedIn and LinkedIn Learning, as well as new tools from Glint, Perceptyx, Qualtrics, Medallia, and Peakon (from Workday), Microsoft is reshaping the daily work experience of employees. When combined with design platforms from ServiceNow and similar companies, these technology combinations enable employers to truly recreate jobs for almost all workforce groups.

The second category includes mini-applications that allow employee applications to appear in the workflow. Companies such as Degreed, EdCast, Udemy (now part of Workday), SuccessFactors, and Oracle provide solutions that allow customers to mix and match different employee systems and embed them seamlessly into Microsoft Teams, Salesforce or Zoom. All of this is done “behind the scenes,” so employees can access other content and key functions without interrupting their daily workflow.

The third category includes platforms supported by artificial intelligence and skills, combining external market data with internal employee information. Leaders include Eightfold.ai and Beamery; vendors focusing on this area include Gloat, Skyhive and Censia. All of these provide employers with advantages in solving recruitment, skill development and internal mobility challenges.

“The company needs a variety of benefits, guidance, and employee productivity systems to simplify mixed work,” Bersin points out. “But the big winners in the next wave of the market will be vendors who open systems for easy integration, make them easy to configure and change, and support them through artificial intelligence and external resources, so that employees can get everything they need to do their jobs. The pandemic tells us that unless technology investments help make employees happy and productive, they are almost useless.”
