ServiceNow announced that it will acquire Lightstep, an application monitoring and observability platform. We hope to combine the workflow automation of IT and AI Ops with software development.
Lightstep architecture
The observable and application monitoring market for Lightstep services has been crowded with companies such as Dynatrace, BMC, Datadog, Sumo Logic, Splunk’s SignalFx, and New Relic.
ServiceNow said it will help DevOps engineers enhance their ability to build, deploy, run and monitor cloud-native applications. The company’s chief product officer CJ Desai told ZDNet that its goal is to “change software development just like we change IT.”
According to Desai, the appeal of Lightstep is that it allows you to understand the entire software stack without having to switch back and forth between platforms. ServiceNow combines its AI Ops and IT workflow automation tools to “seamlessly connect knowledge and actions between all the tools, people, and processes involved in providing a digital customer experience.” “With this acquisition, observability is not Restricted to DevOps,” Desai said.
Lightstep engineers join ServiceNow. The Lightstep team contributed to the open source “Open Telemetry” project and participated in the development of Google’s decentralized tracking systems “Dapper” and “Monarch”. Lightstep was co-founded in 2015 by CEO Ben Sigelman, COO Ben Cronin, and Chief Architect Daniel Spoonhower. So far, it has raised 70 million U.S. dollars (approximately 7.6 billion yen).
ServiceNow and Lightstep hope to expand their digital enterprise structure across their entire product portfolio (ITBM, ITOM, DevOps, SecOps, ITSM). In addition, Lightstep’s technology will provide observability to a wide range of customers.
Lightstep’s platform includes a free version for the community and a pay-as-you-go model for teams, as well as an annual subscription and volume discount plan for enterprises.
The integration of Lightstep and ServiceNow is as follows.
- Integrate Lightstep’s tools into ServiceNow’s IT workflow portfolio.
- Lightstep’s solution analyzes system-wide metrics and tracking data in real time to understand the causes and consequences of changes in application performance, reliability, and development speed. The Now platform coordinates technical and team responses to connect the actions and insights needed to drive digital transformation.
- ServiceNow extends Lightstep’s technology to other parts of the enterprise. Lightstep CEO Sigelman said: “Observability is good for DevOps teams that build and operate mission-critical applications today.” “The value of observability should spread throughout the enterprise.” I have been thinking about this.
- Lightstep’s technology has been adopted by GitHub, Twilio, Spotify, Grubhub, etc. ServiceNow will be able to cross-sell its products to a wider range of businesses.
The acquisition is expected to be completed in the second quarter.
