The 2022 TB Davie Memorial Lecture and other updates

Dear colleagues and students

The annual TB Davie Memorial Lecture will take place on Wednesday, August 24th. There are also updates related to exciting developments in Drupal 9 development and the UCT Press. Read more about them below.

1. Reminder: The 2022 TB Davie Memorial Lecture

The 2022 TB Davie Memorial Lecture will be presented by Professor Fran Elaine Baum, director of Stretton Health Equity at the University of Adelaide in Australia. The lecture entitled “Activism and the Corporate University: incompatible or possible?”, will take place on 24 August 2022, in Lecture Theater 2, Kramer Law Building, Middle Campus, at 18:00 SAST.

2. UCT Press is back home

After more than 25 years, the home of UCT Press will be relaunched through UCT libraries. It is under the management of the publishing house Juta & Company. UCT Press was launched in 1994 and has a proud history as one of the institution’s outlets for scholarly publishing.

When UCT Press was first launched, it was thought that it would use the new digital technology of the day and focus primarily on digital print on demand. With its relaunch, UCT Press will have both print media and an Open Access mode, with print on demand. This will facilitate its smooth transition from the sole print media press with Juta to the increasingly Open Access press at UCT.

Staff and students are encouraged to visit the UCT Press website and explore it and consider UCT Press as the publisher for their next monograph – the call for book proposals is now active.

3. Update on UCT’s Drupal 9 website migration project

UCT’s main website, as well as staff and student websites have been made live on the improved, more responsive to mobile devices, and more secure Drupal 9 website content management system. By the end of this week, the faculty websites will also go live.

This is a significant milestone in the Drupal 9 development and website migration project. The Drupal 9 project is now in the migration phase, where around 330 websites will be migrated from Drupal 7 to Drupal 9. This phase started at the end of December 2021 and will continue throughout this year.

The moratorium on the creation of new websites put in place from August 2, 2020, will be lifted from next week. Requests for new websites can be made through ServiceNow, while Drupal 9 training can be booked through SuccessFactors.
