ServiceNow survey reveals the key skills for a successful CIO

Amsterdam, July 22, 2019-The best performing CIOs focus more on leadership, customer goals, employees, and other business functions than technology. This is based on new research by ServiceNow.

A global survey of 516 CIOs (328 of them from Europe) conducted by the Oxford Institute for Economic Research describes the key skills of modern CIOs. For many years, CIOs have focused on IT, but research shows that 63% of CIOs believe that business and leadership skills are more important than technical knowledge-the most successful CIOs are those who position themselves as visionaries.

One in five CIOs stated that they have mastered the key skills of CIOs, and they stand out in three areas:

  • They are at the forefront of the digital workflow
  • They have influence on the board
  • They have external attention to customers

The best performing CIOs focus on strategy rather than process, and link IT goals to business goals. These CIOs report higher productivity, innovation, and customer satisfaction within their organizations, and have the best relationships with other leaders, especially the CEO and Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO).

CIOs agree that board-level cooperation and cross-team projects are an important part of their role:

  • 64% of CIOs think they need other executives

Digital Technology Teaching

  • 69% said they worked with the CEO to plan

Organization, vital to their role

  • 77% of CIOs said they work with CHRO

Talent strategy is one of their main responsibilities

From a technical perspective, the most successful CIOs are automating and integrating workflows and introducing digital workflows to improve results. They know the importance of digital workflow for improving efficiency (80%), financial performance (78%), productivity (78%), employee performance (76%), and innovation (75%).

“As technology becomes a key factor in business success, CIO expectations have grown exponentially,” said Chris Pope, Vice President of Innovation at ServiceNow. “In the past, the CIO was the most important technical person in the organization, but today, the most successful CIO is a thought leader, innovator, and visionary.”

“CIOs have the opportunity to lead their business transformation. Building influence on the board, external attention to employee and customer experience, and process changes through digital workflows are critical to achieving good performance.”
