The federal government has sent out three rounds of stimulus checks since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, while states and counties continue to send stimulus payments to target groups even today. However, one group that did not get the necessary support but was affected by severe inflation was older Americans. Thus, requests are being made to send more stimulus checks to senior citizens. But, so far, there has been no official proposal to send financial aid to this group.

TSCL Promotes For More Stimulus Checks on Senior Citizens

The Senior Citizens League (TSCL), a nonpartisan seniors group, recently noticed that inflation has reduced the buying power of Social Security recipients by about 40% since 2000.

TSCL Chairman Rick Delaney even sent a letter to Congress last year explaining the hardship faced by seniors. Delaney also asked that Congress send additional assistance to seniors.

‘We heard from thousands [seniors] who had exhausted their retirement savings, who started eating only one meal a day, started splitting their pills in half because they couldn’t afford their prescription drugs, ’Delaney’s letter said.

At the time, the organization noted that Congress was unlikely to send more financial aid to senior citizens in 2021, but hoped it would be a priority this year. To push Congress to send more financial aid, the organization even created a petition calling on Congress to send a $ 1,400 stimulus check to senior citizens.

A report from the National Council on Aging says more than 15 million seniors are considered economically insecure.

Will Senior Citizens Get More Financial Assistance?

Despite efforts from the TSCL, there has been no serious suggestion from lawmakers to send stimulus checks to senior citizens. In fact, there hasn’t been any new federal stimulus check since the third stimulus check was approved in March last year.

Congress is currently focusing on other issues, and as such, federal legislation to send stimulus checks to senior citizens seems unlikely right now.

Seniors, however, can benefit from other federal procedures. For example, the cost-of-living adjustment for 2022 (COLA) of 5.9% is one of the highest ever. This adjustment increases the amount of monthly admission for Social Security recipients.

In addition, there are two other programs that provide more food to low -income seniors, and these are the Senior Farmers ’Market Nutrition Program and Commodity Supplemental Food Program.

Under the first program, eligible seniors get coupons that allow them to purchase groceries at farmers markets and other local businesses. Under the Commodity Supplemental Food Program, qualified seniors get a monthly nutritious food package.

To qualify for these two programs, a person must be 60 or older, and their income must be at or below 185% of the federal poverty level.
