Dusseldorf Only a few days after Bill McDermott resigned as SAP boss, he has a new job: Americans will take over the management of software maker Service Now early this year, as the company announced after the market closed on Tuesday Like that. He succeeded John Donahoe (John Donahoe) in the top position, John Donahoe (John Donahoe) will soon become the new chief executive officer of sporting goods giant Nike.
McDermott has been CEO of SAP since 2010. His contract with the software company lasts until 2021. So far, the exact reason for his resignation is unclear. The manager has adapted SAP to the cloud computing business that ServiceNow also relies on. Shareholders were shocked by the personal details: After trading hours, ServiceNow stock initially fell nearly 12%.
Service Now provides software for digital process design and automation. We use technical terms to call IT and service management. The company’s self-description says that the goal is “people can work more efficiently and better,” whether it’s employees or customers.
The software is suitable for IT, security, personnel and customer service. For example, one solution unifies all tasks that new employees must complete, from setting up an email inbox to transferring data to the personnel department. In addition, users can develop their own applications through the platform. The software runs in the cloud.
The American company hopes to expand in Germany. To this end, it is currently building data centers and hiring sales staff. Customers already include DAX companies such as Allianz, Henkel and Siemens. In the coming week, it will also hold a customer meeting in Frankfurt.
Bill McDermott should already know “Immediate Service”: SAP is a customer and partner. The American process expert has developed a smartphone application based on Sucess Factors, the German group’s personnel solutions. It gathers information from various departments of the company (including IT and finance).
However, the tasks can be very different. SAP was established in 1972 and is a traditional software manufacturer focusing on cloud computing under the leadership of McDermott. Service Now was only established in 2004 and has never had a classic software business.
At the same time, the American company is much smaller: in the past fiscal year, sales reached 2.6 billion US dollars, equivalent to 2.3 billion euros, which is equivalent to an increase of 36%. For comparison: The German software company has revenues of 24.7 billion euros, but its growth rate is much slower.
Under what circumstances, McDermott made a change that the two companies did not initially announce on Tuesday. When he resigned, the manager had stated that he was enthusiastic about his new position, but didn’t talk about it until later. Now is the time.
More: Bill McDermott (Bill McDermott) left a company that was strategically and financially in good shape but customers were not satisfied. His successors, Christian Klein (Christian Klein) and Jennifer Morgan (Jennifer Morgan) are doing a lot of work.
