It has been less than two weeks since Bill McDermott suddenly announced his resignation as CEO of SAP. It is now clear what he will do: McDermott will become the new CEO of ServiceNow.
McDermott stated in a statement about two weeks ago that this is “the time when everyone can start an exciting new chapter.” According to the announcement from his new employer, ServiceNow, this also applies to himself.
McDermott will become the President and CEO of ServiceNow by the end of 2019. He also became a member of the board of directors. “ServiceNow is one of the most exciting innovative and growth companies in the world,” McDermott said in the announcement. “The company has a transformation platform, talented colleagues and unlimited potential.”
Jeff Miller, the lead independent director of ServiceNow, is excited about the new CEO. “His experience and good track record will ensure a smooth transition and continued strong leadership,” Miller said. According to him, McDermott will provide the company with greater motivation.
Changing of the guard
McDermott succeeded John Donahoe at ServiceNow, who will become Nike’s president and chief executive officer in January 2020. Since April 2017, Donahoe has been the CEO of ServiceNow. The company said that under his leadership, the number of customers has continued to expand, and annual sales have increased by more than 30% every quarter.
During the transition period, Donahoe will continue to serve as CEO. In this way, the leadership transition should be smooth. Danohoe will also serve as a member of the board of directors. The semester will end in June next year.
McDermott called it a “personal honor” to replace Donahoe and bring ServiceNow to the “next chapter”. “I’m so excited, I can’t wait to start!”

McDermott announced his resignation as CEO of SAP in early October. He has served as the company’s CEO since 2014 and was also the co-CEO before that. He did not explain why McDermott chose to leave. It was not clear at the time whether a new job was prepared for him.
McDermott will continue to serve as a consultant to SAP for the next two months. His leadership was succeeded by Jennifer Morgan and Christian Klein.
